Karuizawa Distillers plans new whisky distillery Furaliss
By Melita KielyJapanese producer Karuizawa Distillers has partnered with Seibu Group and Furano city in Japan to build a new whisky distillery.

The new facility will be called Furaliss Distillery and will be located in Hokkaido in Japan. It is slated to open in 2028.
Koji Shimaoka, CEO, Karuizawa Distillers, said: “It is a great honour for us to take on the challenge of creating world-class whisky in the exceptional setting of Furano.
“At our new distillery, we are committed to making the most of the region’s natural blessings and cultural richness, while pursuing excellence in both whisky making and the guest experience.”
The name of the distillery is a combination of the words ‘Furano’ and ‘bliss’. It was chosen to reflect the vision of the distillery, which will aim to be a global destination. This will be aided with the inclusion of Seibu Group in the project, which is experienced in operating some of the region’s leading hotels, ski resorts and golf courses.
The distillery will follow Komoro Distillery, the first site from Karuizawa Distillers.
Whisky production at Furaliss Distillery will be overseen by Ian Chang, an acclaimed master distiller and blender.
He commented: “My goal is not simply to create a place for whisky production, but to build a symbol of growth, rooted in the land of Furano. With deep respect for nature, I hope to offer both world-class whisky and unforgettable experiences here.”
Sustainability and local contributions have also been carefully considered by the founders. The distillery will repurpose by-products from whisky production, which will be utilised by local farmers, food producers and restaurants.
Takashi Goto, chairman and CEO, Seibu Holdings, added: “We are delighted to collaborate with Karuizawa Distillers and to integrate their vision, with the rich natural and cultural assets of Furano.
“Together, the three parties aim to create a dream project that inspires people around the world. We are committed to enhancing Furano’s appeal and generating further interest in the region, through this collaboration.”
